Ruined

Author: Paula Morris

Summary: Rebecca couldnt feel more out of place in New Orleans, where she comes to spend the year while her dad is traveling. Shes staying in a creepy old house with her aunt Claudia, who reads tarot cards for a living. And at the snooty prep school, a pack of filthy-rich girls treat Rebecca like shes invisible. Only gorgeous, unavailable Anton Grey seems to give Rebecca the time of day, but she wonders if hes got a hidden agenda. Then one night, in Lafayette Cemetery, Rebecca makes a friend. Sweet, mysterious Lisette is eager to talk to Rebecca, and to show her the nooks and crannies of the city. Theres just one catch. Lisette is a ghost.

Review: I finished the book in one day. Its a fairly short and easy read, but full of adventure, mystery and ghosts. I really enjoyed the storyline and I felt that the plot was consistent and well-paced. I would have loved a little more in depth description of Anton and Rebeccas relationship, but what was given satisfied me just enough.

Rebecca is a strong character with personality not fitting any specific stereotype. Even though she feels like an outsider, shes more a part of the city than most of its inhabitants. Even though she is a girl, she likes sneaking around cemeteries at night. Rebecca isnt inhumanely strong though. She has emotions and sometimes, even though she tries not to, they shine through.

Anton was a little bland, but it might be because the story isnt really about him or him and Rebecca. The book stayed true to its main idea. The mystery surrounding her new life in New Orleans.
