Waiting On Wednesday (5)

Title: Real World

Author: Natsuo Kirino (translated by Philip Gabriel)

Publisher: Knopf Publishing Group

Summary: (B&N) In a crowded Tokyo suburb, four teenage girls indifferently wade their way through a hot, smoggy summer. When one of them, Toshi, discovers that her nextdoor neighbor has been brutally murdered, the girls suspect the killer is the neighbor's son. But when he flees, taking Toshi's bike and cell phone with him, the four girls get caught up in a tempest of dangers that rise from within them as well as from the world around them. Psychologically intricate and astute, Real World is a searing, eye-opening portrait of teenage life in Japan unlike any we have seen before.

Response: It sounds really fascinating. I read another book on stuff like psychology in Japan which was called Chain Mail: Addicted To You which I reviewed here. This one sounds really good and I also used to be obsessed with mystery novels.

  1. You might also like the Rei Shimura mysteries by Sujata Massey. Have you read them? The lead character is a half Japanese art history major from Wellesley who has moved to Japan to immerse herself in the culture and open an art consulting business - but she always finds herself somehow linked to various crime scenes, so she helps solve the mysteries. There's always a gorgeous love interest in each book as well, either a Scottish lawyer or a Japanese billionaire. Best to read them in the order that they were written.

It looks good and it's been a while since I last read a mystery book so maybe I buy it the next time I order from Amazon.
